LANDFIRE Baseline vs Enhanced Fuel Map

❌ LANDFIRE 2020 (Baseline)

  • Updates every 2-3 years
  • Based on 2020 conditions
  • Missed vegetation stress from 2020-2022
  • Static fuel models
R² with burn severity: 0.0965

✅ Enhanced 2022 (Satellite)

  • Weekly satellite updates
  • Detected 2020-2022 changes
  • Captured vegetation stress
  • Dynamic fuel hazard mapping
R² with burn severity: 0.1382
Improvement: +43.1% better correlation with actual burn severity

Methodology

1

Baseline Data

LANDFIRE 2020 fuel models provide the baseline fuel classification at 30m resolution.

2

Satellite Change Detection

Sentinel-2 (10m) and MODIS (250m) imagery from 2020-2022 to detect vegetation changes via NDVI, NBR, and NDMI indices.

3

Data Fusion

Combine LANDFIRE baseline with satellite-detected changes to identify areas of increased fuel hazard.

4

Validation

Compare predictions against actual burn severity (dNBR) to quantify improvement over baseline.

Data Sources

Dataset Source Resolution Update Frequency
LANDFIRE USGS 30m 2-3 years
Sentinel-2 ESA/Copernicus 10m 5 days
MODIS NASA 250m Daily
Fire Perimeters NIFC Vector Real-time
